SA to get R10bn to treat acid mine drainage

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa has received funds totalling $900m (R10m) for treating acid mine drainage (AMD) which occurs when disused mine shafts flood with water and mix with toxic metals, said Bloomberg News.

Citing the Department for Water and Sanitation during a debate in parliament, Bloomberg News said the funds had been pledged by the National Treasury. The funds would be used to treat water from the contaminated mine shafts that decants into nearby rivers.

“An amount of R10bn is required for acid-mine drainage mitigation in the Witwatersrand gold fields,’ the Department for Water and Sanitation is quoted to have said. “Funding was recently secured with concurrence between the Department and the National Treasury,’ it said, without specifying the amount or type of funds.
