[miningmx.com] – ANGLO American Platinum (Amplats) is challenging a law firm and an administration company involved in debt administration asseting they they are practising unlawful over-charging, said BDLive citing papers before the High Court.
The platinum firm is also mounting a constitutional challenge against the fees law firms charge when acting as administrators – a claim repudiated by the unnamed law firm which said the rate of fees calculated in the court papers was incorrect.
BDLive said that were Amplats successful, it could have important consequences for the way debt is collected for thousands of employees, especially in the mining sector.
South African gold producers AngloGold Ashanti, Sibanye Gold and Gold Fields said in December last year that indebtedness was a major problem for employees and fed the social problems prevalent among mineworker communities.
