
[miningmx.com] – THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) would oppose Eskom’s proposed increase to 25.3% in the annual electricity tariff, said BDLive citing Patrick Craven, spokesman for Cosatu.
Eskom said last week that it had asked the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) to reopen its multi-year price determination this financial year because of funding constraints. “These constraints have necessitated Eskom to explore options for further review of tariff increases for the 2015-16 financial year,” it said.
Craven said the increase in the tariff – roughly double the increase that had been expected – came amid an increase in taxes and the fuel levy, adding that “… these increases are just an attempt to shift the burden to consumers for a crisis for which the board and management must take responsibility”.
