Coal strike won’t hurt Eskom, for now

[miningmx.com] – A STRIKE in the South African coal sector would not affect Eskom’s ability to supply power for at least a month, said BDLive citing Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe.

Phasiwe said the company had stockpiles for an average of about 30 days with some power stations having over 50 days of supplies, whilst others had less.

“If the strike extends to two months then Eskom might be affected and we can only hope that NUM and the Chamber of Mines find each other before the strike becomes protracted,” he said.

The chamber which represents Glencore, Anglo American Coal and Exxaro, confirmed that the NUM had not accepted the increased offer of 8.5% (up from 8%) and was still demanding 13%. About 30,000 miners were expected to down tools.
