NUM not planning coal wage talks

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which called a strike in South Africa’s coal sector on October 5, did not plan to have any further talks with producers, said Bloomberg News citing NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu.

“Our members have downed tools and supported our call for a strike,” Mammburu told the newswire agency. Companies including Anglo American, Glencore, and Exxaro Resources have been affected by the strike.

The NUM last week rejected the companies’ latest offer to raise basic salaries for the lowest-paid worker categories by a range of 5.5% to 8.5%. It wants increases of 12% to 13% for a coal-mining industry, said Bloomberg News.
