[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will undertake a go-slow at Sibanye Gold’s Beatrix mine in South Africa’s Free State province if the company continues to refuse signing a wage deal.
David Sipunzi, general-secretary of NUM, told Bloomberg News that union members will give the company four days before the go-slow begins. The union is also talking to its members at Sibanye Gold’s other shafts.
Sibanye Gold agreed a wage deal with the NUM of up to 13% over three years for entry level employees but it also made it conditional on the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) accepting the deal.
AMCU, however, declined to accept the offer and won a certificate of non-resolution from the Commission for Conciliation, Arbitration and Mediation allowing it to call a strike. A mass meeting with members is planned for Sunday (October 11).
