Gold One upholds East Modder dismissals

[miningmx.com] – GOLD One International said its East Modder operation
was operating at half its budgeted production targets for June, as contingencies it
installed amid a strike at the mine “continue to perform well’.

An illegal strike broke out at the East Rand mine on June 3 among members of the
Professional Transport Allied Workers Union (PTAWU), and was interdicted by the
Labour Court the following day.

As a result, Gold One dismissed workers at East Modder, resulting in violent
activities by about 500 workers. In response, Gold One had another interdict issued by
the South Gauteng High Court against further violence.

Subsequently, an appeals process was heard by workers who had chosen to strike, but
after the hearings were concluded on June 21, the company said there was insufficient
mitigating factors to support reversing the dismissals.
