[miningmx.com] – ANGLO American Platinum (Amplats) CEO, Chris Griffith, said “the involvement of the government has not resulted in the company not being able to execute business as it should be entitled to do”.
Griffith was commenting on plans by Amplats to restructure its business which saw the South African government intervene in a process where the platinum company had followed a protocol rooted in labour law.
In the end, Amplats altered its restructuring plans the last iteration of which was in response to demands from the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) which staged a two-week strike at Amplats’ Rustenburg mines.
In an interview with Business Day, republished on BDLive, Griffith said: “The entire restructuring package, of which jobs was just one element, has continued unabated.
“It has probably taken a bit longer because of the engagement, but that’s probably a feature of business going forward.
“There will need to be greater engagement and more time spent between government, labour and business. That’s a reality business will need to get used to.”
