
[miningmx.com] – THE South African government released a draft of the amendment to the Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Act in parliament yesterday, but a legal expert said it still failed to address uncertainties around elements such as beneficiation.
Speaking to Bloomberg News, the Chamber of Mines of SA’s Anton van Achterbergh said: “”It definitely is a better piece of legislation. However, there are some very important areas in which our concerns have not been addressed.
“The major one is beneficiation and all the issues surrounding that. It seems to be that the department is intent on some discounted pricing’ to encourage local processing, he said Bloomberg News.
Enoch Godongwana, chairperson of the ANC’s economic transformation committee said at the Joburg Indaba yesterday: “We can’t define in prices. That part of discussion is misplaced. So for Section 26 (which deals with beneficiation), there will not be a formulation about price”.
