Aurora: scores of illegal miners nabbed

[miningmx.com] — HUNDREDS of illegal miners have been arrested at the Aurora Grootvlei Mine in Springs, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

“We have arrested more than 200 illegal miners so far but the arrests are going on. We are still counting the suspects,” said Captain Johannes Ramphora.

Ramphora told Sapa the arrests began on Monday afternoon after the guards discovered the illegal miners.

“I do not have the exact number for now, as some are still underground. Officers are still on the scene carrying out the arrests.”

Former Big Brother celebrity Brad Wood and four others appeared at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court last week, on charged of murder after four illegal miners were shot dead at the mine earlier this year.

The mine’s management was not immediately available for comment.

The mine is owned by former president Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Zondwa Mandela, and President Jacob Zuma’s nephew, Khulubuse Zuma.
