Amplats extends ultimatum

[miningmx.com] — STRIKING workers at Anglo American Platinum’s
(Amplats) Rustenburg operations are facing the sack should they not return for duty
by Thursday.

The company said on Wednesday that it was extending its deadline, initially set for
earlier this week. Amplats’ Rustenburg operations have been hit by no-shows since
they were re-opened last week. Before that, the company voluntarily shut down its
operations due to fears over the intimidation of workers.

Less than 20% of employees have so far reported for work.

“We have repeatedly urged our employees to come back to work and I do so again – I
am making a personal appeal for all striking employees to return to work
immediately,’ said CEO Chris Griffith.

“If our employees do not heed this call, we will simply have no choice but to begin
disciplinary action tomorrow against any employees who remain on strike and that
action could lead to dismissals.’

The group said that it has so far lost 20,000 ounces in platinum production from the
Rustenburg assets since September 12.
