Gold miners offer lifeline in wage talks

[miningmx.com] — THE Chamber of Mines (CoM) has agreed to give
striking workers in the gold industry more time to consider employers’ wage increase
proposals.

CoM earlier this week set Thursday as the deadline for workers to accept a wage
increase offer, but following talks between the industry body and the National Union
of Mineworkers (NUM), as well as other unions, a new deadline of next week Monday
was agreed on.

CoM is negotiating on behalf of AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields and Harmony Gold, who
are collectively losing around 8,000oz in gold production on a daily basis due to
ongoing strike action at their mines.

“The unions said they’ve received mixed reactions from their members,’ said CoM
spokesperson Vusi Mabena. “We’ve agreed to allow them more time to communicate
with their members.’
