Num, Chamber to start talks on wages

[miningmx.com] — THE National Union of Mineworkers (Num) is to begin official wage talks with the Chamber of Mines on Monday, with the union demanding a 14% wage increase, the union said on Sunday.

The Chamber of Mines represents major gold companies such as Goldfields, Harmony Gold and Anglogold Ashanti, as well as major collieries such as Anglocoal, Kangra and others. The Num is the majority union at the Chamber of Mines representing over 140,000 workers in both the gold and coal mines.

Num general secretary Frans Baleni said the increase was reasonable because headline inflation was around 4%, with fuel and food inflation making up the rest.

“We are hopeful that the Chamber of Mines will accede to our reasonable demands and that there will be no room for confrontation,” said Baleni.
