[miningmx.com] – ARCELORMITTAL SA (Amsa) said it had closed its Vanderbijlpark Works following a fire on February 9 that resulted in “extensive damage”, the company said in a statement.
Shares in the company fell 6.7% to close at R33.12/share on February 11.
“Safety regulations were followed and all employees were quickly evacuated from the area affected and most importantly there were no injuries,’ said Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita, CEO of Amsa.
A comprehensive assessment is underway, but it was too early to quantify the exact production shortfall and economic impact.
However, significant damage had been caused at the works and would lead to a disruption in production, Amsa said.
“The company will therefore not be in a position to completely fulfill current orders and force majeure will be issued to affected customers and suppliers,” it said.
