[miningmx.com] – THE South African Labour Court has reserved judgment on whether the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) can call a strike at the mines of Sibanye Gold, Harmony Gold and AngloGold Ashanti.
The AMCU was appealing an interim order by the Labour Court in January that prohibited a protected strike at the gold mines. It argued that it should not be bound by last year’s 9% centrally-bargained wage agreement between the unions, including the NUM, and gold employers because it did not sign the agreement.
The interim order granted in January prohibiting strike action remains in the place for the time being, said Elize Strydom, chief negotiator at the Chamber of Mines.
“We will now await the judgment of the court,” said Strydom. “The interim order prohibiting AMCU and its members from embarking on protected strike action remains in place. We call on them to continue to respect the order,’ she said.
