Strike hit families queue for food parcels

[miningmx.com] – THOUSANDS of people affected by a strike in the platinum sector, which is now entering its 18th week, queued for food parcels with disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers telling Bloomberg News people were desperate.

“People are really desperate and insecure,’ Imtiaz Sooliman told Bloomberg News. “They’ve lost everything. We’re seeing lots of people who are malnourished and are becoming ill. It’s absolute desperation. It’s 100% to do with the platinum strike.’

The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU), the union that called the strike will meet platinum producers for a second day in mediation held by the Labour Court.
