AMCU platinum strike winding down

[miningmx.com] – THE five month strike in South Africa’s platinum sector was showing signs of ending with the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) calling mass meetings this week to vote on wage proposals.

Jimmy Gama, AMCU treasurer, told Bloomberg News at the weekend that there had been progress in talks. “A breakthrough has been made,” he said.

And Johan Theron, a spokesman for Impala Platinum, said the negotiators had had a successful round of talks on Friday afternoon (June 20), according to BDLive.

“The engagements were constructive and the producers are quietly confident that a negotiated settlement can be reached,” spokeswoman for the companies Charmane Russell told BDLive on Sunday.
