
[miningmx.com] – SHARES in Lonmin retraced yesterday’s gains after workers at its Marikana mine in South Africa’s North West province arrived at work but refused to go underground.
The protest has brought all 13 shafts at the mine to a halt, according to Bloomberg News which cited an emailed communication by Sue Vey, spokesperson for Lonmin. “All 13 shafts are not operational at present,” said Vey. “Employees have arrived at work but have not proceeded underground.’
The newswire reported that members from the Associated Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu) want the offices of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) closed down after an Amcu member was shot dead near the mine on May 11.
