
[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa needs to invest up to R90bn in new coal mines or risk running short of the fuel by 2015, said Bloomberg News citing a report by the Green House, a consultancy commissioned by the SA Coal Roadmap to produce the study.
Most of coal Eskom needs for future use has to be produced by between five to 10 new mines requiring investment of R60bn to R90bn, the report said. It added the coal will be required by 2020, but the impact of the coal deficit would start to be felt as early as 2015, it said.
