[miningmx.com] — KUMA Iron Ore on Wednesday said the planned National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM) strike at its operations from next week was not expected to have a significant impact on production.
The company said it has sufficient iron ore stockpiles to maintain its normal delivery schedule.
The NUM said it would begin striking at Kumba’s operations from Monday next week after wage talks collapsed.
Kumba confirmed that it has received notice from the NUM of a protracted strike by its members that will commence anytime between the evening of Sunday October 3 and the morning of Monday October 4.
It said the NUM has 2,670 members who are part of the bargaining unit at Kumba’s Sishen, Kolomela and Thabazimbi mines.
Kumba said it has offered the NUM increases of 7.5%, 9% and 10% in the various categories, which includes a 0.5% safety increment based on 2009 performance.
Agreement has already been reached on salary and wage increases with Solidarity, the other bargaining unit union, and implemented with effect from the beginning of July.
