[miningmx.com] – ENVIRONMENTAL lobbyist, Mariette Liefferink who heads the Federation for Sustainable Environment, has laid charges against AngloGold Ashanti for alleged tailings leakages in the North West province.
Fin24, citing a report in the Mail & Guardian, said that Liefferink was also preparing to lay criminal charges after an appeal to the energy minister, Dipuo Peters, and the National Nuclear Regulator fell on deaf ears.
The leakages, which are traced by to March 2011, are at the tailings dam of AngloGold Ashanti’s Stilfontein operations and could threaten nearby ground water as well as water feeding the Vaal River, Liefferink told the Mail & Guardian.
An AngloGold spokesperson told Mail & Guardian that the company had just been notified of the charges and would study them first.
