Aurora says it has paid workers

[miningmx.com] — Cape Town – All of the workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) at Aurora’s Grootvlei mine and more than 80% of workers at its Orkney mine have been paid, Aurora’s co-director Thulani Ngubane told Parliament on Wednesday.

Addressing the portfolio committee on mineral resources, he said all payments had to be done via the department of labour and that this had caused a delay.

The department needed to check the authenticity of claimants before the payments could be made.

He said some workers claimed to have worked for Aurora, but were ex-Pamdozi Gold employees.

“They said we are owing them money and its not the case,” he said.

Ngubane could not provide exact figures on the payments which had been made.

Unions, the labour department and Aurora empowerment systems addressed Parliament on Wednesday regarding the situation at the Grootvlei and Aurora mines.

Earlier Solidarity and the Num appealed to the portfolio committee to assist them in addressing the concerns of the workers.
