Ramatlhodi seeks splitting of MPRDA

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH African mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi alluded to the ultimate purpose of referring proposed amendments of the Mineral & Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) back to the National Assembly for further discussion.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, the minister said he would like to split provisions in the act for oil and gas resources in a separate bill. Importantly, he would leave the newly agreed amendments relating to mining untouched.

“The key thing is to try to separate the oil and gas from your traditional mining, in other words, have a separate bill for that,’ he told Bloomberg News on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “If I could achieve that I would be very happy. We must check the legal position to see if that can be done.’

“I would want to stay with the principles that have been agreed upon with regard to the old bill, between the stakeholders: government, the industry, the chamber, unions,’ Ramatlhodi said.
