Nersa allows Eskom more OCGT use

[miningmx.com] – THE National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has given Eskom permission to operate its diesel-run open cycle gas turbines (OCGT) for longer periods than set out in its tariff structure.

The upshot is that as long as Eskom can prove the use of the turbines is prudent it will be able to recover the cost of them from the 2016/17 tariff – a cost that will be borne by South African consumers.

“They asked us on January 5 if they could extend the OCGTs and we have said yes, provided that they can prove that their use is prudent,” Nersa regulator for electricity, Thembani Bukula told BDLive.
