Mathunjwa disputes CoM’s membership data

[miningmx.com] – THE Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) has disputed data provided by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa putting the union’s membership in the gold and coal sector at 27,000.

Joseph Mathunjwa, president of AMCU, told BDLive that its membership was closer to 40,000 in the two sectors which would not necessarily give it a majority over its rival, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), but run it close.

Data from the Chamber of Mines — dated the end of February — indicate the NUM has 54% representation, Amcu 29%, the United Association of SA 2% and Solidarity 7%. About 8% of the combined 94,000 employees in the sectors are not unionised.

Mathunjwa also said he was unhappy with the venue for upcoming wage talks which he said should be on neutral ground and asked for a neutral chairperson to run the meetings, due to kick off later this year.
