AMCU’s Mathunjwa wants the money

[miningmx.com] – Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) dismissed proposals from gold firms for an economic and social sustainability pact, said Reuters.

“We don’t need schemes. We want the money now,” Mathunjwa was quoted by Reuters to have said at a press conference today. His comments come three days before wage talks between unions and companies are due to begin.

“What we are going to say to the unions is that we need to talk about sustainability of the industry and we need to talk about it as partners,’ Elize Strydom, the Chamber of Mines’ chief negotiator, told Reuters.

“The social compact will include sharing the gains if the gold price goes up and if the price goes down, sharing the pain,’ she said.
