Glencore to cut 340 jobs from SA coal ops

[miningmx.com] – GLENCORE is to cut 340 jobs following a decision to shut depleted coal mines, said Bloomberg News citing an emailed response from the Swiss-headquartered mining and trading group.

Some 240 jobs have been eliminated at Glencore’s South Witbank coal mine in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province with another 100 jobs at risk at the nearby Witcons coal processing plant, Bloomberg News said.

A further 1,000 jobs are on the line following plans to shut its Eland platinum mine while it has already laid off 630 workers at its Optimum Coal mine, currently under business rescue proceedings, said the newswire.
