US may investigate Gold Fields bribery

[miningmx.com] – THE US Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Justice Department, may probe an empowerment deal by Gold Fields in which it allegedly bribed African National Congress chairperson, Baleka Mbete, said the Sunday Times citing an article first written by the Mail & Guardian.

Mbete was a shareholder in Invictus Gold, an empowerment company that benefited from a R2.1bn deal in 2010 that the Mail & Guardian said consituted bribery citing a report by Paul Weiss, a UK law firm appointed by Gold Fields to investigate the allegations.
