
[miningmx.com] – A STRIKE at the mines of Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) entered its second day today with majority union, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) planning a march on the company’s head office in Johannesburg.
“We remain open to resolve this dispute with the company as soon as possible,’ Joseph Mathunjwa, president of AMCU told Bloomberg News. “It’s up to them to decide if they want to talk,’ he said.
AMCU is disputing some 3,300 in retrenchments at Amplats’ Rustenburg-based mines that Amplats CEO, Chris Griffith said were necessary in order to preserve other jobs throughout the group.
