[miningmx.com] – THE Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) may call on members to strike after refusing to accept an 8% wage offer which was extended to the union by the Chamber of Mines )CoM), said BDLive citing the union’s treasurer, Jimmy Gama.
The CoM contends that it is entitled to extend an 8% wage agreement signed with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on September 11 as the NUM is the majority union in the South African gold industry, said BDLive.
AMCU counters that it can still call a strike and labour experts believe that in terms of the Labour Relations Act it is entitled to refuse the offer on operations where it has a majority: the Carletonville mines of Mponeng (AngloGold Ashanti), Kusasalethu (Harmony) and Driefontein (Sibanye Gold).
