Universal buys Exxaro’s New Clydesdale

[miningmx.com] – UNIVERSAL Coal, an Australian-listed coal development company, confirmed widely held speculation that it would buy Exxaro Resources’ mothballed New Clydesdale Colliery (NCC).

NCC is adjacent to Universal Coal’s Roodekop deposit in the Witbank coalfields situated in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province and has infrastructure that helps build the business case of the 84 million tonne Roodekop.

“In combination with NCC’s established operation and infrastructure, the path forward to bringing our next mine on stream has certainly been fast tracked,’ said Universal Coal CEO, Tony Weber.

He added the deal would further Universal Coal’s ambition of becoming a mid-tier coal producer. It was commissioning its first mine, Kangala, near Johannesburg.
