
[miningmx.com] – THE five week strike at the mines of Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin is not all bad news as the downtime has eased the pressure on under-fire Eskom.
Bloomberg News, citing Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger, said the platinum strike had resulted in some 400MW less demand on the South African power grid, equal to about 17% of normal demand.
The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) is demanding a R12,500 per month basic wage for members against offers of between 7% and 9% offered by the platinum companies. Wage talks are continuing this week.
