Mathunjwa says tricks won’t end strike

[miningmx.com] – MINING companies would not be able to end the platinum strike by consulting traditional leaders, said Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU).

Speaking to members in Johannesburg, after marching on the headquarters of Anglo American Platinum, Mathunjwa said: “”That trick will never be successful. Traditional leaders cannot mediate in the wage dispute”.

He was referring to a meeting on March 16 between a delegation of traditional leaders led by Congress of Traditional Leaders of SA (Contralesa) president Kgosi Setlamorago Thobejane and mineworkers in Rustenburg.

According to Sapa, Mathunjwa wrote a letter to South African police minister, Nathi Mthethwa, warning that mining companies and Contralesa would be accountable should violence erupt in Rustenburg in the platinum belt.

“Only an agreement can end the strike – not traditional leaders,” Sapa quoted Mathunjwa to have said. Mathunjwa delivered a memorandum to Amplats in which he repeated his union’s demand for basic R12,500 entry level pay.
