[miningmx.com] – A miner was killed at Exxaro Resources’ Arnot coal mine in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, said Sapa citing a statement by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). The accident had not been confirmed by Exxaro at the time of writing.
The NUM’s health and safety secretary, Erick Gcilitshana, said mining companies ought to invest more to protect employees. The fatality was the result of a rock fall, NUM said.
“Fall of rocks has been one of the major killers in the mining industry. We call upon the mining companies to invest more money in protecting the lives of workers [rather] than focusing more on profits,’ said Gcilitshana.
