[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s platinum companies affected by a five month strike would not “be in a rush” to restructure their operations as it would only lead to another strike, said BDLive citing an investment report.
Liberum analyst, Ben Davis, said in a note that rapid restructuring at any of the mines owned by Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum (Implats) or Lonmin could provoke another strike.
There were also complications regarding getting miners back to work and whether all workers would return, said BDLive which quoted analysts saying that 10% to 20% of the workforce might not return after the strike was over.
Implats, for instance, expected 1,000 to 1,500 of its workforce of 30,000 might not return as they may have new jobs, have resigned in order to access their pensions to sustain them during the strike or opted to return hom to avoid repayment of outstanding debts in Rustenburg.
