[miningmx.com] – ANALYSTS criticised some appointments in South African president Jacob Zuma’s new cabinet yesterday saying that they reflected political expedience over economic needs.
“The cabinet appointments suggest that political logic prevailed over economic reform priorities and a good governance agenda,’ said Anne Fruhauf, southern Africa analyst at New York-based risk adviser Teneo Intelligence, in an article by Bloomberg News.
Ngoako Ramatlhodi and Tina Joemat-Pettersson, the minerals and energy ministers respectively were picked out as having little knowledge over the sectors they were appointed to manage.
However the appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s deputy president went down better with analysts who expect him to help repair relations with the private sector.
“A resume of trade union activism and then successful private sector activities has pinned much market hope that Ramaphosa will repair relations between corporates, government and, especially, trade unions,’ said Gina Schoeman, an economist at Citigroup.
