
[miningmx.com] – NAMDEB, a diamond mining joint venture between the Namibian government and De Beers, may sell some diamonds independently of a sales agreement with De Beers, said Bloomberg News citing Nambia’s mines and energy minister, Isak Katali.
“For the company to operate, there has to be an agreement with De Beers,’ said Katali, adding that Namibia won’t initially want to market 50% of Namdeb’s production. “We are being guided by the Botswana example.’ Currently all gems discovered by the joint venture is sold by De Beers, a subsidiary of Anglo American.
Botswana’s Okavanago Diamond Co. started selling 13% of the country’s gems in December, after De Beers agreed to a new 10-year marketing pact, said Bloomberg News.
