[miningmx.com] – A COMMEMORATION of miners shot dead a year ago at Lonmin’s mine in Marikana is being boycotted by the ANC and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) who say the event is being organised by an illegitimate team.
“The commemoration is organised by an illegitimate team called Marikana Support Group – a group which the African National Congress does not recognise,’ spokesman Kenny Morolong said in a statement on Thursday evening.
“The ANC finds it immoral and totally unacceptable that such a traumatic incident could be turned into a political playground by some political parties who seek to enhance their political ambitions and interests,’ he said.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) voiced similar concerns. Lesiba Seshoka, spokesperson for the union, said the event should have been organised through deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe’s office.
