EMPLOYEES at Northam Platinum’s Booysendal mine were scheduled to return to work from the morning shift tomorrow (April 4) following the end of strike action which started on March 26, the company said today.
Some 750 employees contracted through Murray & Roberts Cementation (MCR), went on strike in a dispute over termination packages. This was after Northam announced plans to become the owner-operator of the mine in terms of which MRC employees would be transferred to Northam.
“Northam is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the representative union, for a full return to work by the affected MRC employees, beginning with the morning shift of 4 April 2018,” Northam said in a statement. Booysendal will transition to owner-operator status on 1 May 2018.
